A record is set!

As a small time blogger I just love it when I get comments on my posts. I just got one that gets the prize for 'lengthiest comment on Christy's little blog.' Actually the post got quite a few comments, but the 4th one was the longest ever! It's oddly flattering to think that someone would take so much time to respond point-by-point to my writing. Don't worry - I won't get a big head over it!

I am glad you were flattered, but in a real sense I was not responding only to you. I was responding to all those who hold the same attitude as yourself.

In your reply to my comment, you said,"I think you missed my point though - I am really not trying to make a mathematical case but a theological one." If so, why did you call your post "God's mathematics" rather than "God's power" or "God's values"? I think these titles may have been more appropriate given that your point was "that God is more powerful than humans can imagine and that He values life and each indvidual in a way that humans do not." I realize those were your points, and I fully agree with them. God is more powerful and loving that we can imagine. He values people and things in ways that we probably cannot fully comprehend.

I probably did not do a sufficient job of articulating my underlying concerns. I will try again.

First, I do not want us, as followers of Jesus, to ascribe miraculous explanations to natural events, such as the exponential growth of populations.

Second, as a researcher who productively uses advanced mathematics on a daily basis, I want to be careful that we do not use God's transcendence as an excuse not to excersise reason and sound judgement. Imagine if you, for some reason, were trying to teach your students about budgeting. If one of them said, "I don't need to learn all of this. God will take care of it; after all, his mathematics is different than ours," how would you respond?
